Utah Scientific Standardizes on 3-Gb/s Routing

UTAH-400 Accommodates Highest Quality HD Formats at No Extra Cost

Sept. 8, 2007 — Utah Scientific today announced that all high definition configurations of the company’s flagship UTAH-400 routing system will include a 3-Gb/s switching capability as a standard feature at no extra cost. With 3-Gb/s switching in every router, users are now able to handle all video formats, including SD and HD formats up to 1080p, from within the same system.

“The industry is at a crossroads as far the formats that users are required to accommodate, including SD and a variety of HD formats,” said Tom Harmon, CEO of Utah Scientific. “We’ve seen some customers effectively creating discrete islands of equipment to handle different formats. By standardizing on 3-Gb/s switching, we are allowing them to manage all of their signals from within one system, which simplifies their operation and saves them money.”

In a related development, Utah Scientific is announcing the availability of a 3-Gb/s optical I/O option for the UTAH-400 routers. “Optical I/O is becoming increasingly important in HD facilities and the new signal formats will certainly accelerate this trend.” Harmon said.

“We have been working with Gennum Corporation, our long-time partners in video technology developments, to bring this 3-Gb/s optical solution to market so that we can ensure our customers have a full range of system options in designing their facilities for the new signal formats.”

“Utah Scientific is a recognized leader in video broadcast and we have partnered with them for many years on delivering advanced routing solutions to the broadcast industry,” said Gary Beauchamp, senior vice president and general manager, Optical Products Division at Gennum. “Now, with the integration of Gennum’s new 3-Gb/s optical module, Utah Scientific can deliver a complete copper and optical solution at 3 Gb/s, giving their customers unprecedented flexibility in their system configuration and, just as important, achieving an industry first with the support of a 3-Gb/s single optical serial link.”

UTAH-400 routing systems with 3-Gb/s capability provide broadcasters with a cost-effective solution to manage the highest-quality emerging HD formats (1080p 50/60), while also handling all standard existing formats. The system provides absolute assurance of full flexibility for all current and future routing requirements.

All new UTAH-400 routing systems in production now are 3-Gb/s enabled. Upgrade options will be available to existing UTAH-400 users.
