WKAR-TV Expands Digital HD Capability With Utah Scientific

SALT LAKE CITY — June 4, 2007 — WKAR, a PBS affiliate located at Michigan State University in East Lansing, Mich., is expanding its HD capability with a digital routing system from Utah Scientific. The facility has taken delivery of a UTAH-400 144x144 routing switcher configured to meet its current requirements for both SD and HD video while offering easy expandability to address its need for additional inputs and outputs in the future. The UTAH-400 will provide the signal path for playout to air from an Omneon Spectrum video server under control of an NVerzion automation system. The new system went on air last month.

WKAR has had a Utah Scientific analog AVS-2 routing switcher since 1995, and the reliability of the AVS-2 was a major factor in the decision to install additional Utah Scientific equipment. "This new switcher will fully and directly interface with our existing equipment and is capable of being controlled by our new automation system," said Gary Blievernicht, director of engineering at WKAR.

With the new configuration, WKAR provides one HD and two SD services over the air, with another three programming streams provided to the Lansing metro-area cable system operated by Comcast. The station also delivers nine channels of analog content on the university campus.

The UTAH-400 configuration includes 48 SD inputs, 40 SD outputs, and 24 HD inputs and outputs. Future plans at the station include the purchase and installation of a fully digital master control room, at which point Blievernicht plans to expand the number of inputs and outputs of the UTAH-400 to accommodate the upgrade.
